My sweet in laws gifted us with a bit of cash earmarked for some new furniture, specifically a rocking chair, and this is the one that I settled on. According to the seller, the chair and its mate (which I didn't purchase) most recently belonged to Oklahoma's own Reba McEntire, and came from an auction at her ranch house near the little shop where I found it. Judging by the wooden peg construction, I believe it must be somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 years old.
A rocking chair will be very nice to have in the house come next spring. Yes, the members of Welcome Little Stranger will be welcoming a new little stranger into our family sometime in May, and we couldn't be happier!
I'm putting the finishing touches on my bathroom this weekend, including wiring in two new light fixtures (scary!). Speaking of electricity, I stumbled upon this fantastic video of "If You're a Viper", Bob Howard's 1937 cover of the ode to Wacky Tobacky, ingeniously paired with scenes from El hotel eléctrico.
On an unrelated note, I want to thank each and every one of my faithful readers for sticking with me through all my blogging starts and stops, and for leaving your thoughtful comments. I truly appreciate each one of you, and I apologize for sometimes failing to respond. This is something that I intend to work on, so let me ask you, how do you respond to comments left for you on your own blog? Comment leavers, how do you prefer to receive responses to comments you have made? In the comment section itself? On one of your own blog posts? By email? It seems that there's not a one-size-fits-all solution. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
A few days ago, while browsing at an antique mall, I found this old photograph.
When I turned it over and saw what was written on the back, I just had to bring it home.
"This is our home with Pa and me in the yard I look fleshey there but I had my every day clothes on and they make me look larger." It's signed "Ona" or "Onay". I can't quite tell. Even a hundred years ago, women were worried about looking a little too "fleshey" in photographs. Ona, I feel your pain, although I don't think my "every day" jeans and T shirt are to blame.
